Double deck elevators have two elevator cars permanently fixed one on top of the other, increasing the passenger handling capacity of each elevator shaft. The current maximum speed offered is up to 10 m/s enabling the upper floors in Worlds tallest buildings to be reached in around one minute.

This type of elevator effectively doubles the handling capacity with pairs of double deck elevators working together to serve odd and even floor levels respectively.

An intelligent hall call control system (Destination Selection Control) is used to direct passengers to the correct lift that will serve their destination floor level before entering the car. The intelligent control system also calculates which car should pick up each passenger during each direction of travel, minimising passenger waiting and journey times.

The double deck solution is typically applied in buildings greater than 350m height, where the innovative TWIN elevator reaches the upper limit of its operating range.
